About the School
About
The Bass School is a community of scholars, artists, and creative practitioners defined by their creativity, critical thinking, communication, and cross-cultural understanding. We cultivate skills in critical study and creative practice and foster the generation of new knowledge and new technological experiences.
Within a tier one research university context, our academic programs are grounded in the vital questions of the humanities. We combine technology with the arts and humanities to better understand our world and open new paths for creativity and innovation. Our students learn to cultivate a deep understanding of different cultures and cultural differences — historically, geographically, and artistically. Our academic programs uphold the highest standards of excellence within each discipline and encourage transdisciplinary collaborations that craft original solutions to novel challenges.
Students who study here work side by side with distinguished, award-winning faculty who rank among the most accomplished scholars, artists, and creative practitioners in the fields of animation and games, critical media studies, emerging media arts, history and philosophy, literature, and languages, and visual and performing arts.
Access to our internationally renowned interdisciplinary research centers, labs, creative practice studios, galleries, and collections allows for sharing insights, ideas, and best practices. This rich array of opportunities broadens and enhances the student experience.
The UT Dallas campus has opportunities for students to get involved in areas related to the arts, humanities, and technology. In addition, our campus is in the heart of the dynamic Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, providing access to a thriving art and culture scene.
Mission
The Bass School of Arts, Humanities, and Technology prepares global citizens who investigate and explore complex issues, innovate new forms of expression, and engage communities to advance the common good by promoting curiosity, critical thinking, communication, and cross-cultural understanding.
Vision
We aspire to be an eminent hub for the study, research, and creative practice in the arts, humanities, and design of emerging technologies.
History
The Bass School of Arts, Humanities, and Technology was created to address the needs of a new generation of artists, performers, and scholars. Bass brings together the Schools of Arts and Humanities, founded in 1975, and ATEC, which began as the first arts and technology degree in Texas in 2002. The Bass School continues the tradition of academic and research excellence for which The University of Texas at Dallas, a Carnegie R1 Doctoral Institution, is known.
