In the sixth issue of Athenaeum Review, now available online and in print, historians from the UT Dallas Arts & Humanities faculty offer insights on issues past and present.

Looking back over the 20th century, Kimberly Hill, Assistant Professor of U.S. and African American History, considers the evolving context of the central symbol in President Biden’s 2020 victory speech, in “President Biden, Langston Hughes, And The Expansion Of The American Dream.” Also, considering the early 19th century in “Bonds Of Salvation: How Christianity Inspired And Limited American Abolitionism,” Ben Wright, Assistant Professor of Historical Studies, explores the interaction between abolition and spiritual salvation in the early American antislavery movement.

The new issue also includes work from several faculty in Literature and related fields:

Nomi Stone, Assistant Professor of Literature and Creative Writing, and Frederick Turner, Founders Professor Emeritus, both contributed poems to the journal, and Turner also authored an essay entitled, “Damn Lies and Statistics: A Critique of Probability.” In “Better Lives Through Reading,” Jonathan Hartmann, Lecturer in Arts and Humanities, considers the possibilities that literature opens up to its readers.

Meanwhile, distinguished authors Toni Jensen and Roy G. Guzmán, both of whom visited UT Dallas as guests of the Creative Writing Reading Series, also appear as guests on the Athenaeum Review podcast.

The issue includes work from a diverse range of other contributors throughout UT Dallas, including a report on “Dismantling Living Legacies of White Supremacy” from the Anti-Racist Teach-In Series begun in 2020.

The front and back covers of the issue depict two works from the series 1001 Nights by Maedeh Asgharpour, who received her Master of Fine Arts degree from UT Dallas.

The new issue is free to read online at athenaeumreview.org; printed copies are available around campus and may also be ordered via the website. Athenaeum Review is an open-access, public-facing journal published by the School of Arts and Humanities and the Edith O’Donnell Institute of Art History at The University of Texas at Dallas.
