Issue 05 | July 2020: Equal Justice Initiative

Equal Justice Initiative

Kathryn Yates (M.A. History of Ideas, 2018) and Dr. Kimberly Hill (History faculty) have joined the new Equal Justice Initiative Coalition of Dallas County. The coalition is part of a larger community remembrance project initiated by the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) in Montgomery, Alabama. The coalition will provide public conversations about the history of racial violence in our region and will help dedicate historical markers to two local victims of lynching (William Taylor and Allen Brooks). In recent months, Yates conducted research for the historical markers while Hill helped connect the coalition to subject experts and regional theaters. They were invited to the coalition by George Keaton, the director of Remembering Black Dallas, Inc. and a former guest speaker in Hill’s Long Civil Rights Movement seminar.
