Issue 02 | May 2020: Student Accomplishment

Ji-Won Kim

The Harry W. Bass Jr. School of Arts, Humanities, and Technology is proud to celebrate the accomplishments of our students, including Ji-Won Kim, whose creativity and dedication shine brightly.

Ji-Won Kim, a Spring 2020 graduate, has been working on an ambitious project: adapting Gene Luen Yang’s award-winning graphic novel, American Born Chinese, into a play. This beloved novel explores themes of identity, cultural assimilation, and self-acceptance through a compelling narrative that resonates with readers of all backgrounds.

Under the guidance of Professor Shelby Hibbs, Ji-Won has been crafting the script while navigating the unique challenges of translating a graphic novel’s visual storytelling into the dynamic world of theater. “I’ve been helping her craft the script and consider the distinctions between the two mediums,” said Professor Hibbs. Originally planned as a public reading, Ji-Won’s work will now take the stage in a virtual format, showcasing her ability to adapt and innovate in the face of unexpected challenges.

Ji-Won’s dedication exemplifies the Bass School’s commitment to nurturing bold, imaginative voices ready to transform the arts and humanities. We can’t wait to see how this adaptation continues to evolve and inspire.
