Dr. Kimberly Hill (History faculty) was featured in this year’s university-wide Juneteenth Celebration. In lieu of the annual on-campus celebration with live music and guest speakers, eight members of the UTD community described the significance of previous Juneteenth commemorations and their hopes for future racial justice. Hill focused on a photograph from 1900 that features six formerly enslaved Austinites at Emancipation Park. She used that setting to summarize the rise and decline of the historic black community in East Austin over the twentieth century. The video tribute was organized by the Multicultural Center and the Office of Communications.
