History & Philosophy Programs
History aims to understand the societies, institutions, and events of people in the past. Philosophy engages deep and persistent questions concerning why we believe and how we know the nature of self and our connection with the world.
History
History provides us a framework for understanding today’s challenges and cautions us against mistakes of prior civilizations. Our BA in History helps students understand past civilizations and hone critical skills to better reconstruct the past. Our graduate programs rest on a foundation of advanced, rigorous coursework that introduces students to a variety of historical eras and methodological approaches.
Certificates: Certificate in Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Rights Studies
Philosophy
Philosophy engages the most profound, essential and persistent questions concerning the nature of the good life, why we believe and how we know, the nature of the self and its connection with the world and with society, and the foundations of justice. Our BA in Philosophy strives to be pluralistic and intellectually diverse, with emphases in continental, analytic, feminist, American and non-Western philosophical traditions. Our MA in Philosophy offers grounding in the history of philosophy and professionalization training, either preparing applications to PhD programs or other non-academic opportunities.
