
Audition for UTD Drumline
Auditions for the 2024 UTD Drumline will take place on Tuesday & Thursday, Aug. 20 & 22, 4:00–5:30 p.m., and Saturday, Aug. 24, 2:00–4:00 p.m. in PHY 1.308.
To register for an audition, fill out the 2024 UTD Drumline Audition Registration Form by Wednesday, Aug. 23.. Anyone with prior battery or front ensemble* experience is invited to audition.
The UTD Drumline is a one-credit class (MUSI 3131) and meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4:00–5:15 p.m.
Audition Requirements
Play the version of the following exercises that you know best on whichever instrument(s) you would like to be considered. Snare*, tenors, bass will be provided:
- 8s
- Accent Tap
- Double Beat
- Double stroke roll (duple & triple base)
- Flam Accent
- Flam Tap
- A sight-reading exercise will be given to you at the audition.
- Optional: Play any short (≤ 2:30) rudimental solo on snare or tenors that best demonstrates your current abilities.
*Which grip the snare line will ultimately play is to be determined. Snare drummers may audition playing matched and/or traditional grip, flat drum or tilted drum, whichever is most comfortable for them.
You are strongly encouraged to bring your own sticks/mallets and practice pad to the audition. Otherwise, there will be a pair of Ralph Hardimon snare sticks and a pair of Innovative Percussion bass drum mallets in the audition room.

*There is no front ensemble. If mallets and/or concert percussion are your thing and you do not wish to play a battery instrument, then check out the UTD Wind Ensemble (MUSI 3120). Also, percussion ensemble takes place during the spring semester. Percussion Ensemble will be listed in CourseBook as “MUSI 3130: Percussion Ensemble” when the Spring 2025 course offerings are published.
