Guitar Studies

Develop your skills as a guitarist with opportunities for both solo and ensemble performance.

Students in the UT Dallas Guitar Studies program practice in the studio.
The Guitar Studies Program has guitars available for loan to qualified students enrolled in guitar classes. Please check with your instructor about borrowing guitars.

The Guitar Studies courses offer students the chance to hone their skills through a mix of individual lessons, ensemble work, and performance opportunities. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to refine your technique, courses like Guitar I (MUSI 2315) provide a solid foundation in music reading and technique. For those with some experience, Guitar II (MUSI 3380) and Guitar Ensemble II (MUSI 3116) offer further development and the opportunity to explore more advanced guitar techniques. Note that a classical guitar which combines nylon with wire wrapped bass strings is required for this class.

For Music minor and Music concentration students, Applied Lessons (MUSI 3229) offer personalized instruction to refine technique and performance skills. Students also benefit from the active performance environment at UT Dallas, with opportunities to participate in events such as the Guitar Concert Series and the Texas Guitar Competition and Festival, where they can learn from world-class guest artists and attend master classes. These experiences, along with the chance to study with expert faculty members, provide an enriching environment for aspiring guitarists looking to take their playing to the next level.

If you have questions about the guitar program, please check with James Wilder, interim Head of Guitar Studies at James.Wilder@utdallas.edu.

Enric F. Madriguera Fund

The Enric F. Madriguera Guitar Fund was established in memory of Dr. Enric Madriguera MA’84, PhD’93, who served the University of Texas at Dallas for 45 years as a devoted educator, artist, and founder of the Guitar Studies Program. A master performer, recording artist, and the first holder of the Russell Cleveland Professorship in Guitar Studies, Dr. Madriguera helped shape generations of classical guitarists and co-founded the Texas Guitar Competition and Festival, a beloved annual tradition at UT Dallas.

This fund was made possible through a generous endowment by Richard Kurjan MA’82—Dr. Madriguera’s longtime friend and a 2024 UT Dallas Distinguished Alumnus. Originally envisioned as a gift of friendship, the fund became a lasting tribute following Dr. Madriguera’s passing in 2024. It now supports the evolving needs of the guitar program and its students, providing resources that reflect the passion, dedication, and musical excellence that Dr. Madriguera championed throughout his life.

The Texas Guitar Competition and Festival is a three-day event where guitar students can compete and attend master classes and concerts by internationally recognized guitarists.
