Vocal Ensembles

UT Dallas University Choir

The University Choir (MUSI 3127) is open to all UT Dallas students of any major, with no audition required. The ensemble performs a varied repertoire spanning historical periods and styles, including Renaissance, Classical, and Romantic works, as well as gospel, musical theater, and world music.

Chamber Singers

The UT Dallas Chamber Singers (MUSI 3185 and MUSI 4185) is the premier vocal ensemble on campus. This auditioned SATB choir comprises talented undergraduate singers from all academic majors. The ensemble explores challenging and varied repertoire, including accompanied and unaccompanied works, in an energizing and educational setting.

Instrumental Ensembles

Pep Band

The UTD Pep Band (MUSI 2113) performs at athletic and campus events, offering students, faculty, and staff an opportunity to contribute to university spirit. Open to any UT Dallas undergraduate student, graduate student, faculty, or staff member with ensemble experience on the following instruments can join: flute, piccolo, clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax, bari sax, trumpet, French horn (mellophone), trombone, euphonium/baritone (marching baritone), tuba (sousaphone), bass guitar, and drum set.

Brass Ensemble

The Brass Ensemble (MUSI 3122) studies and performs brass chamber music, featuring works by composers such as Gabrieli, J.S. Bach, and Sousa. Students gain insights into performance practice and participate in public concerts. The course culminates with one or more public performances.

Jazz Ensemble

The Jazz Ensemble (MUSI 2126 and MUSI 3186 and MUSI 4186) is a 20-25 person jazz band open to students interested in exploring jazz performance. Repertoire includes traditional and contemporary works, and auditions are required.

Guitar Ensemble

The Guitar Ensemble (MUSI 2112 and MUSI 3116 and MUSI 4116) is a chamber orchestra for guitarists, organizing parts based on students’ skill levels. Nylon string guitars are recommended, and UT Dallas offers instruments for loan/lease. Students may join Guitar Ensemble II (MUSI 3116) after completing Guitar I or via auditioning.

Radiant Guitar Ensemble

A non-credit, community-based ensemble performing repertoire from folk, classical, and popular repertory. Auditioning or obtaining permission from your instructor is required to take this class. Admission requires music-reading ability and a nylon string guitar.

Harp Ensemble

The Harp Ensemble (MUSI 3124 and MUSI 4124) studies and performs a repertoire of music from all style periods. No previous experience is needed for Harp Ensemble I. Admission is by instructor permission.

Chamber Music: Woodwinds

The Chamber Music: Woodwinds ensemble (MUSI 4V12 and MUSI 4V13) includes trios, quartets, and quintets performing in a variety of styles. Groups often perform at campus events and recitals.

String Orchestra

The String Orchestra (MUSI 2128 and MUSI 3118 and MUSI 4118) includes violin, viola, cello, and bass players performing across various musical styles. Auditions are required.

Wind Ensemble

The Wind Ensemble (MUSI 2120 and MUSI 3120 and MUSI 4120) comprises standard concert band instruments, such as flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, horn, trombone, saxophone, and percussionists trained in rudiments or mallets (not drum set). Students will perform both classic and contemporary repertoire.

University Orchestra

The University Orchestra brings together select members from the Wind Ensemble and String Orchestra to perform a diverse repertoire spanning from the Baroque era to the 20th century. This ensemble is formed by combining the entire String Orchestra with key members of the Wind Ensemble during the second half of their respective class periods. Participation in the University Orchestra requires enrollment in either the String Orchestra or Wind Ensemble class.

Advanced Orchestra / Chamber Music Ensemble
Musica Nova

Musica Nova (MUSI 3112, MUSI 4112, and VPAS 6333) is an elite instrumental group providing opportunities for advanced musicians of all instruments to perform chamber and orchestral music from all periods. Students may also perform as soloists with the ensemble. Admission is by instructor permission.

Percussion Ensemble

The Percussion Ensemble (MUSI 3130) performs contemporary works for percussion instruments, focusing on primarily 20th and 21st-century repertoire.

Drumline

The UT Dallas Drumline (MUSI 3131) includes a full battery section, featuring five snare drums, three tenors (quints), and five bass drums. Anyone with prior battery or front ensemble experience is invited to audition.

Instrumental Ensemble II: Collaborative Piano

Instrumental Ensemble II (MUSI 3181) focuses on the aspects of piano performance that are most important in collaborative music performance: collaborating with vocalists and instrumentalists, participating in small chamber ensembles, and/or duo piano collaboration. Students must be able to read and perform piano literature at a late intermediate to advanced level. Admission is by instructor permission.
