History Honor Society
Phi Alpha Theta
Alpha Mu Iota Chapter
We are a professional society whose mission is to promote the study of history through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication and the exchange of learning and ideas among historians. We seek to bring students and teachers together for intellectual and social exchanges, which promote and assist historical research and publication by our members in a variety of ways.
Please follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for updates.
“Phi Alpha Theta isn’t just a group of individuals interested in history. Instead, Phi Alpha Theta is a group of people fascinated by not just history, but who want to be part of an academic community interested in each other’s work. When joining Phi Alpha Theta, I joined a group of students and professors of all levels who weren’t just historians, but genuinely interested in learning what work was happening in the community. These connections and conversations with Masters, Ph’D candidates, and professors are what allowed me to realize further education past my bachelor’s was something I could do and thrive in. In a system where future planning is so often simply a question of, “do you have all the boxes checked?” Phi Alpha Theta’s members are committed to creating a community of individuals who do more than meet requirements but thrive.”
– John Cakerice, Literature graduate student and Phi Alpha Theta treasurer
Membership Requirements:
There is a one-time membership fee of $60 that includes a one-year subscription to The Historian, and a certificate.
Undergraduate Students
Undergraduate students must complete a minimum of 12 semester hours (4 courses) in history, achieve a minimum GPA of 3.1 in history and a GPA of 3.0 or better overall. A maximum of 3 credit hours of online, transfer or AP credits may be applied to the membership eligibility requirement. All majors are encouraged to join! Membership is not limited to history majors. A chapter advisor may also require that the student be ranked in the top 35% of their class. The chapter advisor has the discretion of making eligibility requirements for his/her chapter more (but not less) stringent than the national requirement.
Graduate Students
Graduate students should have completed a minimum of 12 semester hours towards their Master’s Degree in History, have a GPA of better than 3.5, and have completed approximately 30% of the degree residence requirements.
Faculty Members
Faculty members above the rank of instructor who teach history automatically qualify. Faculty members pay the same $60 induction fee and receive the same membership privileges. We encourage our faculty advisors to invite their fellow faculty to join Phi Alpha Theta.
Applications are accepted twice per academic year, in the Fall semester (due November 15) and Spring semester (due February 15). New members for the full academic year are inducted during our annual PAT Celebration in April, but members are officially part the society once their applications and membership dues have been accepted.
