Transfer Credit
If you have successfully competed graduate-level coursework at UT Dallas or at another institution, you may be eligible to use some of the courses you have taken in order to fulfill the requirements of your PhD program in ATEC, Humanities, Literature, History, or Visual and Performing Arts. One of the main advantages of transferring coursework from previous graduate study is that doing so makes it possible for you to move through your degree requirements more efficiently.
Transfer credit is subject to the approval of the Program Coordinator for your program and the Associate Dean of Graduate Studies. Transfer credit is also governed by UT Dallas’s rules and regulations concerning transfer credit, which can be found in both the Graduate Catalog and UTDPP 1052. In addition, the Bass School of Arts and Humanities has a policy governing transfer credit, which is as follows:
Students who have completed relevant graduate coursework at another institution…
May be eligible to transfer up to 9 semester credit hours of coursework into the PhD, subject to approval of the Program Coordinator and the Associate Dean of Graduate Studies, as well as UT Dallas’s rules and regulations concerning transfer credit, which can be found in both the Graduate Catalog and UTDPP 1052.
Students who have completed relevant graduate coursework at UT Dallas…
May be eligible to transfer up to 24 semester credit hours of coursework into the PhD, subject to approval of the Program Coordinator and the Associate Dean of Graduate Studies, as well as UT Dallas’s rules and regulations concerning transfer credit, which can be found in both the Graduate Catalog and UTDPP 1052.
You may petition to transfer previous coursework when you enter your program or after you have already entered the program. However, acceptance of transfer credit will not occur until after you have completed 9 semester credit hours at UT Dallas with a grade point average of at least 3.0. How many hours you can actually transfer depends on a variety of factors—please consult the Program Coordinator for your degree. Please note, in particular, that University also has strict time limits that may affect the transferability of previous coursework, whether taken at UT Dallas or at another institution—see UTDPP 1052 (“Time Limits”).
In order to initiate the review and approval process, please complete the Transfer of Credit Form for each transfer course and send it to the Program Coordinator of your degree along with necessary documentation.
A list of Arts and Humanities graduate courses is available in the Graduate Catalog, which you will need to determine which UTD course is to be replaced by your transfer course.
