Language Placement

The Harry W. Bass Jr. School of Arts, Humanities and Technology offers courses in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Korean and Spanish.

If you have no prior language experience, you can begin instruction here at UT Dallas. You can begin the process by taking a Language Placement Assessment.

If you prior experience with a language want to continue at UT Dallas, review CourseBook to check available classes and prerequisites If you meet the prerequisite courses required by using prior course credit earned, it’s still recommended that you take the Language Placement Assessment to ensure you have the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in the course.

Language Placement Assessments are free to take. The assessment will have 75 to 100 questions that increase in difficulty. We recommend that you do not guess an answer so the assessment can better place you in the proper level. Foreign-language placement tests are designed to gauge students’ knowledge of the language, and scores on placement tests are used to ensure that students are enrolled in the course that best corresponds to their actual proficiency.

Deliberately underperforming on a foreign-language placement test potentially constitutes a form of academic dishonesty and is strictly forbidden. During the first week of classes, instructors will help ensure that students are enrolled at the appropriate level, and instructors may recommend that students enroll in a higher or lower level course. In cases where a student appears to have deliberately underperformed on a placement test in order to enroll in a course that does not correspond to their proficiency, the student may be subject to referral to the Office of Community Standards and Conduct and/or an administrative drop from the course.
