Minor in Communication Studies

Communication studies courses will help you comprehend theories and concepts that explain human interaction, but the minor in “COMM” will also help train you in the skills employers strongly desire. According to the 2018 National Association of Colleges and Employers, or NACE, 201 employers indicated as “essential” the knowledge and skills that you will learn from Communication studies courses.

Furthermore, the Bureau of Labor Statistics has projected that communication studies jobs will grow at a 4% rate in the next 10 years! Students with academic training in COMM become public relations specialists, broadcast journalists, web content developers and designers, and technical communicators as well as film and video editors – just to name a few career options!

A COMM minor will help you advance not only in your professional career but also engage in civic life. The National Communication Association (NCA) recently posted on its web site the following about academic training in COMM:

Communication studies cuts across contexts and situations; it is the relational and collaborative force that strategically constructs the social world. Knowledge and understanding of communication and strong communication skills allow people to create and maintain interpersonal relationships; employers in all sectors seek employees with strong communication skills; and society needs effective communicators to support productive civic activity in communities.

COMM courses advance the idea of citizenship and that individuals live and act in the context of a larger, and increasingly connected, world.
