The core of the photography program involves digital photography, and darkroom-based black and white photography. Advanced students refine their portfolio for exhibition, developing critical responses to issues in contemporary art. Advanced classes vary, from engagement in photography and new media to specific applications, such as studio lighting.
The photography facility includes a black and white darkroom with 13 enlargers, large format digital printer and dedicated workstations for film scanning and image editing. Photography equipment is available to students on a checkout basis. The School of Arts and Humanities provides high-end computer facilities for students working with camera-based imaging and emerging digital technologies.
The University of Texas at Dallas houses the Comer Collection, comprised of almost 100 photographs dating from 1934 to present, which supports courses in the history of photography. Campus exhibitions of contemporary art and photography, artist lectures, and class visits to galleries and museums, all provide exposure to current dialogues in the arts.
